🌍 Haritanın Özellikleri

İlk kez Amerika kıtasını gösteren haritalardan biridir. Kristof Kolomb’un Amerika’yı keşfinden (1492) yalnızca 21 yıl sonra hazırlanmıştır.

Afrika, Avrupa, Güney Amerika’nın doğu kıyıları ve kısmen Kuzey Amerika haritada yer alır.

Harita, dönemin coğrafi keşiflerinden yararlanılarak hazırlanmıştır. Piri Reis, özellikle Kristof Kolomb’un kaybolmuş haritasından ve 20’den fazla farklı haritadan faydalandığını söyler.

Haritada sadece coğrafi şekiller değil, aynı zamanda notlar, açıklamalar ve gemi resimleri de bulunur.

*Osmanlı’nın dünya coğrafyasına bakışını gösteren en önemli eserlerden biridir.

*Amerika kıtasını gösteren en eski haritalardan olduğu için, dünya bilim tarihine de girmiştir.

*Günümüzde Topkapı Sarayı Müzesi'nde saklanmaktadır (sadece parçası günümüze ulaşmıştır).

🔹 Piri Reis’in 1513 haritası, Antarktika kıtasını buzsuz şekilde gösterdiği iddiasıyla da ünlüdür. Bu yüzden bazı araştırmacılar, haritanın o dönem için bilinmeyen coğrafi bilgilere sahip ol

abileceğini söyler.

🌍 Features of the Map

• It is one of the first maps to depict the American continent. It was prepared only 21 years after Christopher Columbus’s discovery of America in 1492.
• Africa, Europe, the eastern coasts of South America, and partly North America are shown on the map.
• The map was created using the geographical discoveries of the period. Piri Reis states that he especially benefited from Christopher Columbus’s lost map and more than 20 different maps.
• The map includes not only geographical features but also notes, explanations, and ship illustrations.

⭐ Importance

• It is one of the most important works showing the Ottoman perspective on world geography.
• Since it is among the earliest maps depicting the American continent, it has entered the history of world science.
• Today, it is preserved in the Topkapı Palace Museum (only a part of it has survived).

🔹 Piri Reis’s 1513 map is also famous for allegedly depicting the continent of Antarctica without ice. For this reason, some researchers claim that the map might contain geographical information unknown at that time.
